Growing up, big family dinners meant turning the house upside down—extra leaves added to the dining table, and every available chair drafted into service. Kitchen chairs, desk chairs… if it had four legs, it was invited to dinner.
The kids’ table was practically a holiday tradition in itself. It was usually a card table that was set up for the younger children. There were usually at least 6 kids at this table. The oldest of the siblings and cousins got to sit at the adult table. The younger kids were seated at the kids’ table.
Boredom and bad behavior
And of course, we were expected to be on our very best behavior for the entire event, which, in hindsight, feels wildly optimistic. I can’t remember a single year that actually happened. There was always fidgeting, whining, or the occasional meltdown… and not all of it came from the kids’ table.
The truth is, asking kids to sit still and behave for hours on end doesn’t exactly match the whole “happy holiday” vibe. They’re excited, a little overstimulated, and just trying to survive the long stretch between “don’t touch that” and dessert.
That’s exactly why having something simple (and fun) at the kids’ table can make all the difference.
Printable coloring pages or placemats and lots of crayons are a perfect antidote to boredom, no matter the occasion. Holiday dinners, birthday parties, or anytime you expect kids to sit still for a long period of time. Give them something fun to do, keep them occupied at the table with a minimum of fuss.
You’ll be recognized as the genius that you are for providing this brilliant solution to keeping the kids happy for the duration of a big family gathering.
